Watching launches from SaxaVord, Shetland

United Kingdom · Public viewing: Limited · 1 spot, last verified 2026-10-02.

SaxaVord is the UK's first vertical orbital launch site, on the northern tip of Unst, the most northerly of the Shetland Islands. Viewing is designed around a controlled, pass-based area rather than open roadside spots. The pad is quiet between launch windows, so check for an announced window before planning any trip.

Public viewing at SaxaVord, Shetland

Public viewing: Limited Viewing needs registration, a ticket, an organised tour, or is limited to a few specific spots.

SaxaVord plans an authorised viewing area for launches, with a limited number of viewer passes. Unst residents get first call and any unclaimed passes go to people from outside the island. Exclusion zones and road closures apply on launch days.

Official and primary sources for this label

If you cannot be there: SaxaVord says test flights and launches will be live-streamed. The launch page lists the webcast when Launch Library 2 has the link; also check SaxaVord and the rocket operator's channels.

Stay out of restricted zones. Launch sites, safety zones and military areas are closed on purpose; entering them, or photographing them where that is banned, can bring fines, detention or worse under local law. Only use viewing places that the site operator, the local authority or an accredited tour operator names, and follow staff and police instructions.

Crowd estimates are computed from launch type, local time and weekday; they are a guide, not a measurement. How we estimate it.

  • No viewing area location, shuttle details or pass-application link were found. Early local news coverage mentioned a park-and-ride arrangement and a viewing area near Norwick, but we could not confirm it from an official page.
  • The operator says launches are announced with at least 24 hours' notice inside a multi-week window.

Road closures, official information and advisories

T-ZERO does not collect or republish closure data. Use the official or local sources below, and check them again on launch day.

Road closures and exclusion zones are published once a launch window is announced; check the SaxaVord site and Shetland Islands Council notices.

Travel advisories and local rules

UK entry rules depend on your nationality; check them before travel.

Entry rules, permits and security conditions differ by country and change. Read your own government's current travel advice before you plan a trip around a launch.

Getting there

Unst is reached by ferry from the Shetland mainland, itself reached by ferry from Aberdeen or by air. SaxaVord warns that ferry places are at a premium and accommodation is scarce, so book travel and lodging early and only once a launch window is announced.

Safety

Do not enter the exclusion zone or closed roads. A maritime exclusion zone and a larger warning zone also apply at sea. Follow the arrangements given to pass holders, and respect residents: Unst is a small community.
