Watching launches from Virginia's Eastern Shore

United States · Public viewing: Yes · 3 spots, last verified 2026-10-02.

Wallops Island hosts sounding rockets and smaller orbital launches. NASA's Wallops Visitor Center has a free launch viewing area a few miles from the range, and Chincoteague Island offers backup spots a bit further away.

Public viewing at Virginia's Eastern Shore

Public viewing: Yes At least one public viewing area is open without registration or a ticket.

Several public beaches, parks and ticketed venues offer views of the launch pads.

Road closures, official information and advisories

T-ZERO does not collect or republish closure data. Use the official or local sources below, and check them again on launch day.

NASA says Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge and Assateague Island National Seashore (Virginia District) are subject to closure during Antares launches, and some ESVA-listed locations may close; check Virginia State Police and VDOT for road closures. ESVA Tourism says the refuge fully closes four hours before an Antares launch and, for sounding rockets, the south OSV zone closes four hours before.

Getting there

The Visitor Center is on Route 175 about six miles east of US-13 and five miles west of Chincoteague Island, roughly 60 minutes south of Salisbury and Ocean City, MD. Large launches bring traffic jams for miles on the few roads, so arrive early and expect 1 to 2 hours to leave afterward.

Safety

Do not park on Route 175. Expect a security checkpoint and bag check at the Visitor Center. Biting insects are common near the marsh: bring repellent. For large launches the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge and the Virginia district of Assateague Island can close; check before going.

What to bring

Insect repellent, water and snacks (there is no food service other than a drink vending machine), chairs or blankets, and a standard school-size backpack or smaller: coolers and large bags must stay in your vehicle.
